50@50 - Week 1

My weekly update, for my 50@50 list has to have a few sections every week

  1. Why I chose to have a section or specific item on the list

  2. A para about the charity I contributed to

  3. A review of something artistic

  4. And possibly the audio file(s) for the review I do.

  5. A summary of how the week went

1. Why I choose to include philanthropy

So as I mentioned when I started on this challenge for myself, I would talk about why I decided on each of the items in the list. Last week when I shared my list, my wife mentioned - if this for personal growth why do you want to share it, especially things like donations you make are not meant to be shared (we can discuss humility, cultural norms of not drawing attention to self etc.) - So I decided to address why I put this section in there even though I planned to share about it. I feel the world has become a lot about sensationalism for the wrong reasons and not enough attention is given to the great good that so many people and organizations do. By sharing about organizations that do good I hope to do my small bit to inform of things that people or groups do to bring happiness in the world, so we can promote the good that is around us, instead of the sensationalism.

2. Rationale and choice of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

My intent is to choose organizations that address the needs of children. This is because in the case of children are born into a situation not of their creation. As we grow, there is a chance that we may have 'brought it upon ourself'. This may not always be the case, but in the case of children you can never make that argument. So with this in mind the first organization that I chose to donate to is the St.Judes Children's Research hospital. An interesting titbit I found out in the process of checking if it is ok to donate here, I realized that the main source of funding comes from ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) and they aim to provide free service with goal to raise survival rates of kids with cancer.

Why I found it more interesting was that the impression I had, though poorly informed, was that Lebanon and Syria were strife ridden middle-eastern countries and to see that charities driven by ALSAC is one of the largest organizations in helping children with cancer, reinforced my belief that the news cycle is driven by sensationalism and not balanced with all the good that is done. We are all humans and let's all strive to bring happiness - 'Samasta loka sukhino bhavantu' - Let there be happiness and peace in all realms.

3. Review of something artistic

I like to have a framework around things I do, as is probably evident from the way my list is structured. I am thinking or various things I can review, but want to create a framework that will help me decide the 50 things and I have not got one yet, so though I have thoughts around it, I will sleep over it and make sure I catch up on this in the coming weeks

4. Product review audio file

I came up with the framework for this one, and the way I intend to go about it is to focus on the B2C funnel, start with the high level picture and then start digging into each area of the funnel and products and solutions offered. So more to come here too.

5. Update for week 1

I think I did a decent job for week one of my challenge. I have not fallen behind on any of the items that require a weekly cadence, so good on around 45 of the 50 items and should be able to catch-up on the remaining 5 (just to make sure I can compensate, I did jump ahead on one of the items. So feeling good going into week 2, and will work on better organizing to be efficient about things.

Signing off for week 1. Life is too short to fight - Love all Serve all.
